The Geraldines' minor boys hosted unbeaten Cooley in Game 3 of the Louth Minor League Div 1.

Cooley started off well and took an early lead with a good brace of points. Ralph Tinsley replied with a well-taken point after being set up by the roving Cian Speight. Gers entered a purple patch with Franek lashing in a goal courtesy of a fine pullback from Sean McKenna. This was followed by a second goal when the determined Mal Madine, despite serious pressure put Lynch’s through ball into the net. Mckenna and Speight added on another two points with Cooley managing a single white flag in response.

2-04 was a good score for the first half and with the Geradlines defence of Broe, Ashwanth, Laukai and Greene covering well for each other at speed and forcing turnovers Cooley had only 0-3 on the board.

Like the first half, Cooley started brightly nailing on four points with Geraldines' only response being a fine point from Ralph Tinsley following a good catch and pass from  Owen McGahon. With another two points, Cooley was back in the game. It took several excellent saves from Evyn in the Gers goals to keep Cooley at bay. The Geraldines were still playing well in attack with Dobros and Sweeney with good support runs. The Cooley keeper had a fine save from one such attack.

However, the Geraldines' efforts paid off with Cian Speight notching a valuable point. This was followed by a well-taken second goal from half-back Mal Madine who hit the net with a composed shot outside the square.

Gone are the days of 15-man teams, Aaron O Donoghue, Evan Hoey Rogers, Joe Lynch and Niall Coleman had all joined the fray and were putting in good shifts.

The match continued in a similar vein with no quarter asked or given. Cian Speight nailed a free in response to a Cooley minor.

The last five minutes saw the Geraldines bombard on Code Red and defended with their bodies Cooley had to search for goals. And defend they did with goalkeeper Evyn to the fore marshalling his defenders well and despite several close shaves, the Geraldines weathered the storm clearing each time, coming out on top by 7 points.

It was a solid strong performance with all departments doing their bit. Evyn in goals had a faultless performance and dealt with all balls safely and decisively. As mentioned, defenders all worked hard, and their tight tackling gave Cooley little room to play with. All defenders joined up in attack when they could and weren’t afraid to burst forward. Greene, Laukai, Broe and McGahon all had forays deep into Cooley territory.

The midfield of Finn Madine and Franek worked hard against strong tall opponents. Attacking when they could and defending well with some great turnovers.

A feature of their game was intelligent punching of the ball away from their opponents.

The forwards worked hard to get their scores and were well-backed by goals from Mal and Franiek. Indeed it was only the excellent shot-stopping of the Cooley keeper that kept the goal tally to 3.

Whilst our referee had special mentions for our numbers 15 (Cian Speight )and 10 (Maciek Dobros most would agree that the majority of players walked off having put in a decent shift. As always there is room for improvement and coaches will look forward to addressing those issues. Math sibh.
