Newtown Blues 2-11 Geraldine’s 1-11
A battling performance that could easily have seen our junior team win ended in disappointment on Tuesday night in Drogheda. Played on a gloriously warm evening that may not have suited some of our older soldiers it was nip & tuck in the first half. A well worked goal by the blues gave them a one point lead at half time. The first half highlights included Jack McGaileys two pointer , Ben Smiths first point for the club and the gentle encouragement given by our veteran corner back.
The halftime team talk had the desired effect with Danny registering an early goal and it bounced around the square forever. Unfortunately the blues went straight up the other end and scored a goal themselves. Liam & Andrew provided great movement up front without ever touching the ball while Aaron didn’t move at all but got a point. At this stage Cormac Cillian and Joe had the full forward line bottled up, forcing them to shoot from distance. Something they did successfully five times over the next ten minutes !!!
Our half back line of Senan, Jack & Josh were breaking up the field more regularly now and Jack came back , the other two lads had wintered well so we’re happy enough to stay there. We finished very strongly with Jack scoring an amazing point when it was easier to goal and Danny hitting the bar and post in the last few minutes. So a disappointing result for Cathal O Briens men who was that quiet on the line you would think he wasn’t there!! On the night our midfielders Michael & Ryan were very good as were Cathal and Evan H. Evyn’s kickouts were excellent often clearing halfway. Congrats also to Cillian F & Alex on making their adult debuts.
The positives were that Stephen Johnson never moved the ball up against us while the negatives were that you
Need to be fit and that body fit jerseys aren’t ideal for junior teams.
