Gers 3-8 St. Kevins 1-11
Paddy Sheelan 3rd Round - 3rd March 2019
Geraldines Senior Mens Team made it 3 wins out of 3 in the Sheelan Cup and qualified for the 1/4 finals against St Mochtas. St Kevins, from Philipstown, were the opponents on Sunday in Stabannon. The Kevins opened the scoring with a point in the 2nd minute and then doubled their lead on the 5th minute. It took the Gers 10 minutes to open their account with a goal from Paddy Geoghegan after good work down the left hand side from our men. Kevins knocked over a free to level the game but then Dara Hamill continued his impressive form with 3 points, including one from a free. In the 18th minute, The Kevins pulled one back but then our roaming corner back Ryan Trainor scored a lovely point from the right hand side. Just before the 1st half came to a close, Dara Hamill and Kevins exchanged points from frees to leave 3 points between the sides.
The 2nd half had just begun when the ball broke nicely to Conor McGowan and he buried the ball into bottom of the onion bag to make it 6 between the sides. When Dara Hamill pointed from a free in the 8th minute, the weather was starting to take it’s toll on the game. It was like a dam, drizzly, snowy, sleety wet afternoon. 3 Kevins points from frees brought 4 between the sides entering the last 15 minutes. Within a couple minutes though, Dara Hamill scored another two points and another Paddy Geoghegan goal put the Gers ahead by 9 points. Kevins never gave up and in the last 5 minutes they scored 4 points, 2 from frees and 2 from play before a mix up in the Gers defence gave a goal to the Kevins which finished off the game. The Gers finishing with a 3 point win.
