Gers 3-13 Newtown Blues 1-13
Division 1 Round 2
7th April 2019
The Gers supporters and Senior Mens team left Drogheda today with smiles on their faces after a 6 point win over county champions Newtown Blues. Blues started the scoring with a nicely taken point from play. James Craven got the Gers going when he found the net with his 2nd goal in two games. The Blues levelled things up with 2 points from play until Jim McEneaney scored his first point on the 7th minute. Blues scored 2 points from play to level the game. Good pressure from the Gers forwards from a Blues kickout produced a goal from Jim McEneaney which he buried into the bottom corner. The county champions showed why they’ve won 2 champions in a row by scoring a goal and a point to have them leading by one. But the Gers finished the first half stronger with 6 unanswered points from Dara Hamill, 2 from frees and 1 from play, county players Jim McEneaney and James Craven and Fearghal ‘Chippy' McDonald. The Blues scored a point from a free which was the last before halftime.
Halftime score 2-7 to 1-7 to the Gers.
Dara Hamill continued his scoring form with a point in the first 30 seconds of the second half. Blues cut the Gers lead to 3 points with a free. Then adopted Haggardstown man, Conor Rafferty, swung his left foot from about 45 yards and put the Gers up by 4. The man on form Dara Hamill extended the Gers lead to 5 points. The Blues reduced the deficit once again with 2 points. Then the turning point of the game was when Stephen Reidy scored a goal which looked more like a try straight out of the Aviva. This put the Gers up by 6 but the Blues responded with 2 quick points. A bit of a ruck at the Blues bench stopped the game for about 5 minutes. With the Gers leading by 4 going into the final 5 minutes, Dara Hamill twisted and turned to stuck the ball over the bar. This more than sealed the victory for the Gers but in injury time the Blues piled on the pressure and made it a 4 point game. Then deep into injury time Dara Hamill and Jim McEneaney kicked 2 points to make it a 6 point victory to Eamonn Dunne’s men.
