Division 1 Round 7

11th May 2019

A lovely Summer’s evening in Monasterboice saw the Gers Senior men suffered their first defeat of the league. Dara Hamill got the scoring going with a free within the first couple of minutes. After points were exchanged between  the sides with Matt Corcoran getting the Gers one, Naomh Mairtin took control. 2 goals from the Monasterboice men had our men on the back foot. Gers losing by 5 points with just 10 minutes gone. The next 3 scores came from the Gers, 2 from Dara Hamill and 1 from Josh Arrowsmith but the Mairtins made sure they kept the Gers at arms reach by scoring 3 unanswered points. Coming into the final 10 of the first half, Dara Hamill scored a free with the help of the top of the post. Josh Arrowsmith got his 2nd point of the game to cut the Mairtins lead to 3 points. Then the Mairtins 3rd goal came and an additional 3 points put the Mairtins up by 9 at halftime.

Halftime score Gers 0-7 Naomh Mairtin 3-7

Two changes at halftime by Eamonn Dunne hoped to breathe new life in his team for the 2nd half. Matt Corcoran got the first score of the half but the Mairtins increased their lead to 10 with the next 2 scores. Then the Gers moved the ball up the field when it reached Glen Trainor who duly obliged by burying the ball into the net. Glen Trainor also got the next point and it looked like this lifted the Haggardstown/Blackrock men. The Mairtins never panicked and knocked over the next score. Another Dara Hamill point and one from halfback Fearghal McDonald gave the Gers supporters some hope. Once again the Mairtins got the next score to keep distance between the sides. Coming into the last 10 minutes with the Mairtins having a 7 point lead, Dara Hamill reduced it to 5 with 2 points. With 5 remaining and the Gers trying to chip away at the lead, Dara Hamill reduced it to 4 points but the Mairtins got the next 2 points. The last score of the game came from the boot of Dara Hamill which left a 5 point with for last years county finalists.
