Choosing your clubs top XV is always a risky job when you played with many of the protagonists. However Jemser Reneghan never took a step back when playing and doesn’t intend to start now. He’s had plenty of time to think about it with the recent lockdown and this is what he has come up with.
In goals Brian Farrell gets the nod ahead of Joe Ward winner Colman Rushe.
A full back line of John Neary, Michael Thornton and John Smith and the cast in stone halfback line from 82 of Speedy Thornton , Pat Lynch and Jim himself, does indeed look formidable. When questioned on the merits of former countyman Gerard Hoey & current Louth star James Craven, Jim felt that they would be able deputies if Speedy or Pat got tired !
Midfield saw Jim partner brother Paul with All Ireland winner Frank Lynch. Jim did briefly consider Padraig McDonnell but felt on further consideration that playing alongside his brother Paul probably made Padraig look a better Footballer than he actually was.
The forward line was the easiest for Jim to pick. Intermediate wining captains Nicky Browne and Jim McEneaney flanked Jimmy McDonnell in the half forward line. Inside see’s Aidan Prendergast “the only footballer ever to come out of Blackrock,“at 13. Mal Rogers at 14 and Barry Hamilton at 15 . When asked who was unlucky not to make the forward line Jim replied”no one” but if any of the above were unavailable he would stick Joe Corcoran out of the way in a corner.
Kevin Whitey Lynch would manage the team.
Many thanks to Jim for starting the debate and entertaining us royally in doing so.
