A fiesty affair was played out tonight in Haggardstown when St. Brides were winners in a local derby quarter final in the Sheelan Cup.
Geraldines got off to a good start with a point from Gerard Hoey. The lead was short lived when St. Brides scored 3 unanswered points. Jim McEneaney reduced the deficit but only for St. Brides to go up the field and put the ball beyond Sean McEneaney in the Gers goal. The two teams exchanged points before the referee brought the half to a close with St. Brides leading 1-4 to 0-3.
Geraldines started the 2nd half like the 1st with a point, this time from the boot of Shaun Callan. Jim McEneaney added to his total for the night with another free. However a mistake in the Gers defence saw St. Brides get another 3-pointer direct from a forty yard free. After Jim McEneaney won a penalty for the Gers, a controversial moment happened which led to the sending off of Shaun Callan. After everything had settled down, Jim McEneaney stepped up but St. Brides keeper guessed correctly and saved it.
The Gers had their best period of play scoring 5 unanswered points with 4 from Jim and one from substitute Conor Rafferty. The Gers applied pressure until the very end but St. Brides killed the game off in the dying seconds with a goal to advance to the semifinal. The final score was Geraldines 0-10 St. Brides 3-5.
