Gers boys got their campagin off to a winning start in Tullyallen on Monday night with a four point win against a strong Glen Emmets outfit that pushed them all the way. Final score Gers 3.12 Glen Emmets 3.08.

The early exchanges were brisk with Glen Emmets taking a one point lead after 4 minutes. We equalised almost immediately through a point from Mark Leavy. The Gers had a purple patch for 10 minutes and played excellent football scoring 2.5 without reply. A point apiece from Luke Andrews & Mark Leavy, two points from Barra Duffy, 1.1 from Ben Gartlan and a goal from Niall Brennan kept the score board ticking nicely. The boys led by 2.6 to 0.2 the 15 minute water break. It came at the right time for Glen Emmets, allowing them to regroup whilst at the same time stalling the momentum Gers had built up. The Gers were dealt a major blow just after the 1515min restart when Daragh OGradaigh had to retire injured. Despite 1.1 Mark, Glen Emmets scored 2.4 during this period to leave the 3.7 to 2.6 at half time.

The 2nd half was a much tighter affair. The Gers dug in and defended valiantly showing alot of grit and determination. 2points from Jai Akhal and Ben Gartlan were cancelled out by 2 Glen Emmets points leaving the score 3.9 to 2.8 going into the last 15minutes. Points from Niall and Francis Lynch were cancelled out by a Glen Emmets goal which set up a tense final 5minutes as Glen Emmets pushed everyone forward for an equaliser goal. The Gers lost Niall Brennan to a Red Card with 5mins to go and it was all hands on deck to see the game out. Mark Leavy kicked what was probably the best score of the night from a tight angle in the last minute of normal time put the Gers four points up and relieve the pressure. ThThere was a further 3 mins of injury time due tto a number of stoppages in the final 1515mins of the game and super stop goalkeeper Evan Durnin meant the Gers held out for a well deserved 3.12 to 3.8 victory.

The lads showed real commitment and spirit to dig out the win and everyone from 1 to 21 played their part.

The Gers play Ardee St Marys next Monday (10/8) Haggardstown and with holidays, injury and suspension it will require another big effort from the lads to maintain momentum.

The boys would appreciate support for their next game.
