A glorious afternoon in Haggardstown saw our Senior Men take on Cooley Kickhams.
It didn't take too long for the Gers to register their first point from Conor Rafferty. Shortly after this Cooley levelled it up with a 45. Patient play and tenacious defending was story of the half for the Gers. Feidhelm Joyce used his pace to tap over the Gers 2nd point. This was followed up by a Fearghal McDonald point from left half back.
After the water break, the Cooley men got their last point of the 1st half from a free. Gers extended their lead before the break with a long range effort from keeper Sean McEneaney and 40 yards man Conor Rafferty.
The 2nd half began with 2 points from Cooley to reduce the deficit to 1. Some excellent football from our Men saw them notch a score of 1-2 to open a 6 point lead with points from Jack Reid and Gareth Neacy and a Conor Rafferty penalty into the top left hand corner.
After the 2nd half water break the Cooley men seem to be rejuvenated which saw them score 4 unanswered points leaving 2 between the sides. Another Jack Reid looked to stem the tide of Cooley but a penalty for Cooley put the sides level with 7 to go. The 2 sides exchanged points with 3rd point of the day for Reid. Reid's 4th and last point and a well deserved Matt Corcoran point in the dying minutes gave the Gers breathing space. The victory was sealed when substitute Shane O'Hanlon struck Gers 12th and final point.
Superb performance by the lads who play in the 1st round of the Championship next Sunday against St. Patricks.
