The Gers Minor Boys were in action in the 3rd round of matches in their Division 1 B league/championship on Thursday night. With the aid of a strong breeze in the first half the boys started well and were winning most of their battles around the pitch. Despite missing some scoreable chances the Gers kept the scoreboard ticking over while the dangerous Kevin’s/Michaels combination were happy to counterattack and make the most of their scoring opportunities. A great move midway through the first half would result in a thunderbolt of a goal from Beanón Corrigan, rifling the ball in of the underside of the bar from 15 metres out to give the Gers some breathing space their possession deserved. However all the hard work would be undone just before halftime with the concession of a penalty which was duly converted. The scores at halftime would read Gers 1-09 to 1-06. With the wind still blowing strongly, the second half was always going to be difficult and for the first 10 minutes or so the boys battled well and kept their opponents at bay with some great defending and work rate. A goal on the break by Donal Leavy was just reward for the effort the boys were putting in and would just about keep their noses in front. Unfortunately that was as good as it got. The water break would prove to be the undoing of the boys, with all momentum seemingly lost. Upon resumption we would concede 2 goals in quick succession to all but kill the game with the remaining scores coming from the Kevin’s/Michaels. Final score would read 3-16 to 2-10. For 40 minutes the boys competed well and more than matched the opposition in a keenly contested and entertaining match. With better decision making and cutting out the costly mistakes which the team are being heavily punished for the boys will hopefully grow and learn. Scorers on the night were Beanón Corrigan 1-06, Donal Leavy 1-00, Adam Gartlan 0-02 and Danny Nordone 0-02. Thanks to all of the boys for their efforts. There is no fixture this week.
