Gers Boys U16 Leage / Championship Round 4 vs Mattock Rangers / Hunterstown Rovers Match Report: The Gers Boys U16 travelled to Collon for their match against Mattock / Hunterstown knowing only a victory would suffice to keep their U16 Championship hopes alive. The boys made an excellent start and despite going behind by two points, they rallied well to control proceedings in the first quarter and lead at the water break by 1-2 to 0-2. The goal was scored by Niall Brennan following an excellent move involving several players. However the boys would rue the 3-4 goal chances that were missed and the 3-4 wides they kicked during this period. Mattick / Hunterstown applied more pressure playing with the wind in the second quarter overturning the deficit to lead 1-6 to 1-2 at half time. Despite trailing at half time confidence was high given that the Gers had the wind advantage in the second half. The Gers started the second half brightly and narrowed the gap to two points midway through the third quarter thanks to a goal from Sean Gartlan. However two goals in the latter part of the quarter helped the home team into a flattering 3-9 to 2-6 lead. The lads knew that an early goal was required in the final quarter and Sean Gartlan provided that to reduce the gap to three points. Mark Leavy followed up with a second goal to draw the match with 5-6 minutes to play. Whilst the momentum had swung towards the Gers, they could not get a score to take the lead despite some excellent pressure. The locals kept their cool and kicked three further points. The Gers had a couple of chances for goals that they failed to convert eventually going down on a score line of 3-13 to 4-7. Overall it was a much improved performance from the previous week with strong performances from Cian O’Donaghue in goals, Aaron McGuiness and Aaron Spaight in defense and Luke Andrews and Sean Gartlan in attack.
