On Wednesday evening the u16 girls gave their best performance of the season so far with a commanding display against the Martins. Needing a win to ensure they would progress to the semi final stage, they showed desire and intensity right from the throw in through to the final whistle and never allowed their opponents any sort of foothold during the game. Any attacking threat was quickly snuffed out by the tenacity of the Gers defence who were quick to close the Martins down and deny them scoring opportunities. Midfield were willing runners and covered an enormous amount of ground between setting up the forwards while also doing their defensive duties and helping out the defence when required. The Gers forwards were causing the opposition all sorts of problems by getting into space and supporting each other and would work some excellent scores in each half. Indeed it was a combination of good goalkeeping, some wayward shooting and the woodwork that denied the girls adding to their final tally. All in all it was a great effort by everyone and testament to the work the girls are putting in at training. Full time score was Gers 3-16 Martins 0-06. Well done and thanks to all involved. There is no scheduled match next Wednesday as the girls have completed their championship fixtures, but they will find out their semi final opponents after the final round of fixtures next week. Scorers were Rachel Lynch 0-05, Alex Bewley 1-01, Faye Tinsley 1-01, Katie McGeough 1-01, Karina Corcoran 0-03, Méabh Fee 0-02, Emma Whately 0-02 and Sophie Woulfe 0-01.
