Gers 2-9 Cooley Kickhams 1-7

Paddy Sheelan Group 1 Rd 2

10th June 2021.

2 wins in a week for our Senior Men and subsequently booking their place in the quarter final of the Paddy Sheelan Cup. They did this with a 5 point win over Cooley Kickhams in Haggardstown on Thursday. The first score for the men in green came after a lung busting run by full back Nicky Mackin with ended up with a free which was duly slotted over by Shane O’Hanlon. Our 2nd point of the night was a beautiful long range free from Michael Rogers. First goal of the game came on the 15th minute mark, when a long kick out Sean McEneaney was tapped down in path of Fearghal McDonald who galloped up the field. A couple of quick hand passes ended with the ball in the Cooley net off the boot of centre half Gareth Neacy.

The Gers followed the goal with 4 points without reply from Paddy Hoey, Shane O’Hanlon free, Shane Rogers and corner back Ryan Trainor. Gers seemed to be coasting to a 7 point lead at half time. However a Cooley pointed free and a mistake in our defence saw Cooley awarded a penalty and duly slotted home. This left 3 points between the sides at the halfway stage.

Cooley reduced the lead to 2 points with another free after the break. It wasn’t long until the Gers added another goal to their tally. A long ball into the square was knocked down by midfielder, Michael Rogers, into the path of his brother Shane, who buried it beyond the Cooley keeper. Both sides exchanged points before the 2nd half water break with ours coming from Michael Rogers.

The restart saw new man playing wing back, John McCrohan, getting his first score with a well worked point. With 10 minutes remaining Cooley added another free to the scoreline and left 5 between the teams. Gareth Neacy got the Gers final point of the game just before the 60 minute mark. The Peninsula Men finished the scoring for the game with another and a 5 point victory when the referee blew the full time whistle.
