Gers Minor Boys open Div1 League campaign with a defeat to Glen Emmets in Tullyallen.

The Gers Minor Boys opened their Div 1 League campaign with a defeat to Glen Emmets on Friday night going down on a score line of 6-8 to 4-5. In what was a high goal scoring game Glen Emmets opened strongest scoring two goals within the first five minutes. Their lead should have been more only for some excellent saves from goalkeeper Cian O’Donaghue. The Gers settled after this and worked their way into the match scoring a goal from Niall Brennan and a pointed free from Mark Leavy to trail 2-0 to 1-1 at the water break.

The Gers played well in the second quarter with some good pressure from Ben Gartlan, Tom Cuniffe, Aaron Spaight and Eoin McDonnell keeping Glen Emmets penned into their own half for long periods. The Gers out scored their opponents 3-1 to no score with goals from Mark Leavy, Ben Gartlan and Luke Andrews, and a wonderful point from play from Mark Leavy giving the Gers an 8 point cushion at half time (4-2 to 2-0). Despite tfe turaround the Gers were guilty of some really poor shooting and should have led by 5-6 points more at the break given the dominance they had in this period of the game. The third quarter proved to be the pivotal period in the match. After opening brightly but failing to convert three goal opportunities, the Gers conceded 3-5 without reply responding with a solitary point from Niall Brennan just on the water break. Momentum had shifted at this stage with Glen Emmets leading by 5 points going into the final quarter (5-5 to 4-3). Both teams exchanged points for most of the fourth quarter. The Gers pushed hard for a goal and were denied by stout defending and some excellent saves by the Glen Emmets goalkeeper. Glen Emmets scored 1-2 in the last 2-3 minutes of the match to eventually win by 9 points on a score line of 6-8 to 4-5.

In the end, the score probably flattered the hosts as the game ebbed and flowed from end-to-end throughout. The Gers next game is on 16/07 at home to Baile Talun.
