Gers Minors get their first win in Div 1A.

The Gers minors got their first win in Div 1A with a hard fought victory against Mattock /Hunterstown In Haggardstown tonight. The Gers made a bright start and led 1-4 to 0-3 at the break. Mark Leavy and Niall Brennan caused big problems for the Mattock / Hunterstown defense and scored 1-3 between them with a point at the end of the first quarter by Tom Cunniffe.



The Gers out scored their opponents again in the second quarter 1-1 to 0-3 to lead 2-5 to 0-6 at half time. The lead was built on a strong defensive and midfield performance with the early ball reaping dividends for the full forwards. The Gers continued to win the key battles in the third quarter and again outscored their opponents 0-5 to 0-2 to take a commanding 8 point lead into the final quarter. Injuries to Ben Gartlan and Eddie Finnegan slowed momentum and 3-4 excellent goal chances that were not converted made for a nervy final 10 minutes. Mattock /Hunterstown outscored tge Gers 1-4 to 0-2 with goalkeeper Evan Durnin and defenders Sean Gartlan and Jai Akhal making vital stops. Despite conceding the final quarter the Gers held out for a well deserved and hard fought 2-12 to 1-12 victory.
