The Gers U12 boys had a tough battle with a strong Sean O’Mahony’s side in Haggardstown on Wednesday evening.
The lads started well and got 2 early points on the board with Rónán Duggan and Joe Lynch registering first blood. The Dundalk lads responded with several well taken points, to lead coming into the first water break.
At the start of Q2, SOM managed to score their first goal of the night in a well-worked move. The Gers lads responded brilliantly by working the ball up the pitch to score a goal of their own, with Roan Norton blasting to the net. The teams traded points coming into half time including a neat point from Hugo Nolan, which left SOM ahead by 4 points, 1-7 to 1-3.
The 3rd quarter was an equally tight affair. The Dundalk lads got the better start and managed to score 3 points in a row, before Hugo Nolan & Joe Lynch responded with points of their own to keep the Gers lads within touching distance coming into the last water break.
The final quarter started with some end-to-end football, before SOM registered another goal. Once again, the Gers lads responded with a goal, with Joe Lynch finishing off a nice move to register a personal tally of 1-2 in another impressive display. Gers then continued the comeback with Cillian McKevitt scoring a neat point from a tight angle.
Things took a twist soon after when Jack Kavanagh had to retire due to an injury, following an excellent display at full back. The loss of Jack was to be significant. Gers did not have any substitutes on the night, SOM kindly agreed to also play 14 aside. In the final quarter SOM made good use of their bench and finished strongly as the Gers lads tired in deserved victory. To their credit despite the fact they were missing 7-8 players and playing into a stiff breeze in the 2nd half, the Gers lads gave a great display of determination and perseverance in an entertaining night’s football.
