GERS U-17 GIRLS WELL BEATEN IN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL The refixed u-16 “A” championship final from last October was eventually played out in Haggardstown last Wednesday night. Unfortunately the girls lost their way in the second half and ended up on the wrong side of a heavy defeat against their arch rivals Cooley. Our girls were eager to carry on their good form from last year and started very brightly scoring 1-1 inside the first few minutes. But Cooley responded as they do and notched a goal on the stroke of the first water break. Our girls were excellent all over the park in that first quarter but wayward shooting let Cooley off the hook. The second quarter was an even affair. Both teams traded points leaving the narrowest of margins at the break. This was as good as it got for the Gers girls. Cooley took control of the third quarter and to their credit played outstanding football to build an unassailable lead coming into the final quarter. Once again our opponents were just too strong and they ran out both comfortable and worthy winners. Nevertheless it is important to remember the Gers girls achievements last year. After an early season drubbing at the hands of the Kickhams, the girls took it upon themselves to learn and improve and that is what they did. They only experienced one more defeat in that campaign and showed their metal winning close encounters against the Kevin’s and the Martin’s. Their semi final victory over Naomh Martin was the highlight when they showed how much they had improved. Unfortunately Covid robbed them of their opportunity to play the final when they were reaching their peak. Congratulations to all the girls on the longest ever u-16 campaign.
