The Gers U12/11 selection win the Conor McSkeane memorial tournament in Donoghmoyne on Saturday.
The girls set off at 9am on a rainy dark morning. The panel of 10 girls were joined by 7 hardy supporters to make the journey. The girls were paraded onto the pitch to the theme from the Sunday Game. After the national anthem the games commenced. A fantastic start gave the Gers a healthy first win against the home club. Second game was a really tight affair against Aughnamullen who would go on to make the final.
That left Gers as group winners and into a semi against the more competitive Donoghmoyne side. Gers went behind early in the game but railed in the second half to come our comfortable winners.
So on to the final against Aughnamullen. The rain was lashing down at that stage. An extremely tight game saw Gers trail by 2 points at half time. Early in the second half the girls drew level and then a quick break by Aughnamullen left a one on one with with the keeper. The shot heading for the top corner was deftly touched around the post by goalie for the day Maisie Ball. That proved to be the turning point as Gers went on to gain a 2 point lead which they fought tooth and nail to maintain. And maintain it they did to the joy of all supporters parents and coaches.
Thanks to Donoghmoyne and the Parents of Conor McSkeane for extending the invite to the Gers. Great memories for all.
