The U14 boys travelled to Drogheda to meet the Newton Blues on a bright Easter Saturday evening.
The Gers boys started well despite playing into a strong breeze. James Scanlon showing great leadership once again stepped into goalkeeping duties and delivered a flawless performance. Sean Spaight scored an early goal to settle nerves while James deflected a fine dipping shot bound for top of the net over the bar to set a strong platform as the Gers boys took a lead of 2:07 to 0:04 into the break after a tense first half.
Joe Lynch and Aaron O’Donoghue enjoyed a dominant display in midfield. With the benefit of the wind in the second half they won lots of possession and funnelled good supply into the forwards.
Joe operating very well in a more defensive role than normal still managed to find goal. Spotting the keeper off his line Joe lobbed brilliantly from just over half way line to find the net. Aaron was clinical too rattling the net with a powerful close range shot, an apt reward for the consistently hard working captain contributing 1:03 on the day.
Also putting points on the scoreboard, Roan Norton was again busy. He together with the other forwards John Smyth, Oscar Little, Hugo Nolan and a versatile Roan Carroll capitalised on the strong supply, all combining well to feed the magnificent ever-impressive Sean Spaight who finished the day with an awesome personal tally of 6:05.
There was a welcome back to action for Sam Jaytoo at the back. He joined an impressive defence led at the back by Jack Kavanagh, with the tenacious Daniel Hanna also making life difficult for the opposing forwards. Niall Bradley Coleman, Danny de Lása and Conall Gaughran also impressed on the half back line as Gers finished with an impressive 8:11 to 0:8 win.
