In what was a thrilling encounter at McGeough Park, the Under 12 match between the Geraldines and the Dreadnots did not disappoint last Friday evening. The Geraldines came into this match on the back of a victory in their opening league game.
Taking advantage of a strong breeze, the Dreadnots started the game the stronger of the two sides. The Geraldines' defence, which included Niall Fennessy, Oran Burke, Ben King, Senan O'Connor, Oisin McKevitt, and Danny Rochford, was tested early on, but they held firm. Sustained pressure from the Dreadnots eventually led to two quick points in succession followed by a goal.
The Geraldines, determined not to let the Dreadnots run away with the game, battled hard to keep them at bay. Alex Gray, in goals for the Geraldines, made some crucial saves to keep the game alive. James Durnin managed to score the only point for the Geraldines in the first half, leaving them trailing at halftime by 1 goal and 3 points to 1 point.
As the second half got underway, the Geraldines came out with a renewed energy and determination. Darragh O'Neill and Tom Johnston took control of the midfield, and provided the forwards with a constant supply of the football. Harry Smith, James Durnin, Carl Laverty, and Rian Burke were the beneficiaries of this, scoring some much-needed scores and enabling the Geraldine to take the lead in an entertaining contest. Logan McGahon, Richard Whately, Aaron Broe, Rayyan Akhal and Ollie Halpin worked tirelessly to keep possession in the Dreadnots' half, preventing them from getting a foothold in the game in the second half. Zach Healy's introduction in defence helped the Geraldines to maintain their lead as the Dreadnots tried to stage their own comeback.
In the end, the Geraldines' hard work and persistence paid off as they emerged victorious, winning the game 3-10 to 3-07. This was an exhilarating game of football, with both sides giving it their all. The young players showed great skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the game. The Geraldines will undoubtedly take great confidence from this victory as they move forward in the league.
